For us, this story starts in August 1911 when Lewis Hine took several photographs of the Child Workers in front of the Eclipse Cotton Mill in North Adams, MA. Hine was working for the National Child Labor Committee and was taking thousands of photographs of Child Workers in Mines, Mills, Farms, Canneries, etc. We wanted to use Art to tell the Story of What Was It Like To Be A Child Worker In The Eclipse Cotton Mill In 1911. Our THE MILL CHILDREN Exhibition opened on the 100th Anniversary of Lewis Hine’s visit to the Eclipse Mill. Since then, it has traveled to other Mill Towns in New England. It is now in Adams which has its own very interesting Berkshire Cotton Mills Story. Please visit the 5 Hoosac Street Gallery in the coming weeks to learn more.
