MILL GIRL now at North Adams Public Library

The BRILL GALLERY is very pleased to announce that the MILL GIRL oil painting is now
framed and hanging in the North Adams Public Library. After a year of fund raising, and the
generous support of the following: The James and Irene Hunter Charitable Trust, Adams
Community Bank, City of North Adams, In Memory of Ermelinda and Giacomo Cozzaglio, In
Memory of Lucy C. and Edward I. Bassi, Rebecca Cook and Bernard Dickens, Greylock Federal
Credit Union, The Porches and various Friends, the Library now owns the MILL GIRL which
was painted by local Artist William Oberst. Oberst painted MILL GIRL as part of THE MILL
CHILDREN Project which was launched in the Eclipse Mill Gallery on the 100th Anniversary of
Lewis Hine’s photographs of the Child Workers in front of the Eclipse Cotton Mill in 1911.

This 40” x 50” oil painting depicts an 11-year old Cotton Mill Worker standing in between
equipment made by the local Hunter Machine Works and a Mill Overseer. Most of the Mill
Children who worked in the North Adams Mills were French Canadian. The North Adams
Library was the home of one of North Adams’ wealthiest woolen mill owners, Sanford
Blackinton, who in 1867 built this mansion with Civil War profits. When Blackinton and his
wife died, Albert C. Houghton, who was the Mayor and the owner of the Arnold Print Works and
The Adams National Bank bought this mansion and in 1896 gifted it to North Adams to be used
for the Library. So, on several levels, the Library is the logical permanent home for MILL
GIRL. A plaque is in the process of being fabricated by local sign maker Jack Brooks.
